Marriage Licenses

Issuing of:

Marriage licenses are issued at the town or city level. The couple must visit the town office in person to apply for a marriage license.

  • If both of you are residents of the state of Maine, you would apply at the town office where at least one of you is a resident. If you are residents of different Maine towns, you both may apply in one town or the other – you do not need to apply separately in each town.
  • If one is from out of state, then both of you should apply in the town where one holds residency.
  • If neither of you is a resident of Maine, then you may apply in the Maine town office you are getting married in.

Your marriage license is valid for 90 days and can only be used within the State of Maine. The person performing the ceremony is responsible for returning the license back to the town office that issued it for certification.

Requirements:

Photo ID is required.

If this is not the first marriage for one of you, bring a certified copy (raised seal) of the divorce decree or if the marriage ended in death of a spouse, their death certificate.

Applicants must be over 18 years old. Written parental consent is required for an applicant under 18. Written parental consent and written consent of a judge are required for an applicant under 16.

  • Ordained ministers of the gospel

Obtaining a Marriage License from the Town of Blue Hill

Once a completed/signed “Intention of Marriage Application” is turned into the town’s Clerk and its’ receipt has been acknowledged, we have a 24 hour (next Business Day) turn around to finish the process. You may find the Intention of Marriage Application on the Sates website, or we can e-mail it to you.

When you have been contacted to come in and complete the process, there will be a fee of $40.00.

The Officiant is responsible for returning the license back to the Clerk with their information complete. The license can now be signed off on from the Clerk and Marriage Certificates can be requested.
