Trailer Registration

Can I register my trailer in Blue Hill?

  • You must be a Blue Hill resident. We are unable to process any of these transactions for anyone whose legal domicile is not in Blue Hill. Please be prepared to show proof of residence (with your street address, not PO box).
  • We cannot issue vanity plates (where you choose your own text). If you would like a vanity plate, please complete your registration with a plate from our inventory, wait 30 days, and then use this online portal to purchase your vanity plate.
  • If you are registering new camper trailer or transferring it from out-of-state, please come to our office between 9:00 AM and noon.

What do I need to bring?

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I traded in my old trailer. Can I keep the same plate?

A: Yes, but only if the old trailer was registered to the exact same people as the purchasers of the new trailer.

Q: The person from whom I bought my 3000+ lb. trailer never registered it, so the title is still in the name of the person from whom they bought it. How do I proceed?

A: Make sure that the person named on the title and the person from whom you bought it both filled out the transfer-of-ownership section of the title, and that you have the Bill of Sale between them. Then, come into the town office and ask for a Transfer of Ownership (MVT-16) form, which is basically a duplicate of that part of the title; fill it out just like the title, but between yourself and your seller. Bring the title, MVT-16, and both bills of sale into the office: we need to be able to show the full chain of ownership from the last titled owner. If three or more sales have taken place since the trailer was last titled, we will take your excise tax and then send you to a BMV branch office to complete your transaction. If the trailer is under 3000 lbs., it does not need to be titled, and we only need to see the chain of Bills of Sale.

Q: I’m out of town and can’t come in to register my new trailer. Can someone else do it for me?

A: We require your signature on some documents, including one that cannot leave our office until it is signed. The only way someone else can do it for you is if you give them power of attorney to sign on your behalf, and they bring in all of the necessary documents named above as well as their POA documents. Of course, the trailer doesn’t need to be registered until you’re planning on towing it, so it can probably wait until you’re back in town. This does not apply to renewals – anyone can do those on your behalf as long as they can produce the required documents.

Q: How do trailer registrations differ from car/truck registrations?

A: Trailers that don’t have living quarters owe no excise tax and can be registered for two years at a time. Trailers over 2000 lbs. that don’t have living quarters all have a fixed expiration month of February, while lighter trailers and those with living quarters follow the same staggered schedule as cars and trucks.
